Neal A. Maxwell – Our Acceptance of Christ

by on Mar.05, 2011, under Talks

The most important question in human history is one which echoes down through the corridors of time; it will not go away: “Jesus asked them … what think ye of Christ?” (Matt. 22:41–42.) Sooner or later, this will be the vital question for all mortals, including you, my friends! A failure to answer this question is an answer.

Granted, there have been and still are many mortals on this planet who do not yet know the name of Jesus Christ, let alone accept him as their Redeemer. Many others are too preoccupied with the cares of the world. Still others acknowledge Jesus as a great moral teacher, as if he were merely a one-time Socrates of Samaria or a Plato who lived in Palestine.

Authority to Fulfill God’s Work

by on Nov.28, 2010, under Quotes

“I wonder, brethren, how many of us seriously ponder the inestimable value of holding the Aaronic and Melchizedek Priesthoods. When we consider how few men who have lived on earth have received the priesthood and how Jesus Christ has empowered those individuals to act in His name, we should feel deeply humble and profoundly grateful for the priesthood we hold.

“The priesthood is the authority to act in the name of God. That authority is essential to the fulfillment of His work on earth. The priesthood we hold is a delegated portion of the eternal authority of God. As we are true and faithful, our ordination to the priesthood will be eternal.”

Richard G. Scott, “Honor the Priesthood and Use It Well,” Ensign, Nov. 2008, 44

A Fundamental Principal

by on Nov.28, 2010, under Quotes

“The fundamental principle of our religion is faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Why is it expedient that we center our confidence, our hope, and our trust in one solitary figure? Why is faith in Him so necessary to peace of mind in this life and hope in the world to come?

“Our answers to these questions determine whether we face the future with courage, hope, and optimism or with apprehension, anxiety, and pessimism.

“My message and testimony is this: Only Jesus Christ is uniquely qualified to provide that hope, that confidence, and that strength we need to overcome the world and rise above our human failings. To do so, we must place our faith in Him and live by His laws and teachings.”

Believe in Christ

by on Nov.28, 2010, under Quotes

“To all who may have doubts, I repeat the words given Thomas as he felt the wounded hands of the Lord: ‘Be not faithless, but believing.’ Believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the greatest figure of time and eternity. Believe that his matchless life reached back before the world was formed. Believe that he was the Creator of the earth on which we live. Believe that he was Jehovah of the Old Testament, that he was the Messiah of the New Testament, that he died and was resurrected, that he visited the western continents and taught the people here, that he ushered in this final gospel dispensation, and that he lives, the living Son of the living God, our Savior and our Redeemer.”

Serving Others

by on Nov.28, 2010, under Quotes

“When we seek to serve others, we are motivated not by selfishness but by charity. This is the way Jesus Christ lived His life and the way a holder of the priesthood must live his. The Savior did not care for the honors of men; Satan offered Him all the kingdoms and glory of the world, and Jesus rejected the offer immediately and completely (see Matthew 4:8–10). Throughout His life, the Savior must have often felt tired and pressed upon, with scarcely a moment to Himself; yet He always made time for the sick, the sorrowful, and the overlooked.”

Dieter F. Uchtdorf, “Lift Where You Stand,” Ensign, Nov. 2008, 54

Of One Heart and One Mind

by on Nov.28, 2010, under Quotes

“As we consider the unity required for Zion to flourish, we should ask ourselves if we have overcome jarrings, contentions, envyings, and strifes (see D&C 101:6). Are we individually and as a people free from strife and contention and united ‘according to the union required by the law of the celestial kingdom’? (D&C 105:4). Forgiveness of one another is essential to this unity. Jesus said, ‘I, the Lord, will forgive whom I will forgive, but of you it is required to forgive all men’ (D&C 64:10).

“We will become of one heart and one mind as we individually place the Savior at the center of our lives and follow those He has commissioned to lead us.”

Moving Forward in His Work

by on Nov.28, 2010, under Quotes

“With all my heart and the fervency of my soul, I lift my voice in testimony today as a special witness and declare that God does live. Jesus is His Son, the Only Begotten of the Father in the flesh. He is our Redeemer; He is our Mediator with the Father. He loves us with a love we cannot fully comprehend, and because He loves us, He gave His life for us. My gratitude to Him is beyond expression.

“I invoke His blessings upon you, my beloved brothers and sisters, in your homes, in your work, in your service to one another and to the Lord Himself. Together we shall move forward doing His work.”

Hope Sustains Us

by on Nov.28, 2010, under Quotes

“The things we hope in sustain us during our daily walk. They uphold us through trials, temptations, and sorrow. Everyone has experienced discouragement and difficulty. Indeed, there are times when the darkness may seem unbearable. It is in these times that the divine principles of the restored gospel we hope in can uphold us and carry us until, once again, we walk in the light.

“We hope in Jesus the Christ, in the goodness of God, in the manifestations of the Holy Spirit, in the knowledge that prayers are heard and answered. Because God has been faithful and kept His promises in the past, we can hope with confidence that God will keep His promises to us in the present and in the future. In times of distress, we can hold tightly to the hope that things will ‘work together for [our] good’ (D&C 90:24) as we follow the counsel of God’s prophets. This type of hope in God, His goodness, and His power refreshes us with courage during difficult challenges and gives strength to those who feel threatened by enclosing walls of fear, doubt, and despair.”

Atonement

by on Nov.28, 2010, under Quotes

Jesus Christ entered a garden called Gethsemane, where He overcame sin for us. He took upon Himself our sins. He suffered the penalty of our wrongs. He paid the price of our education. I don’t know how He did what He did. I only know that He did and that because He did, you and I may be forgiven of our sins that we may be endowed with His power. Everything depends on that. What then shall we do? We will ‘take upon [us] the name of [the] Son, and always remember him and keep his commandments which he has given [us]; that [we] may always have his Spirit to be with [us]‘ (D&C 20:77). Everything depends on that.”

Our Savior’s Invitation

by on Nov.28, 2010, under Quotes

“Our Savior extended this invitation to each and every one of us individually:

“ ‘Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.

“ ‘For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.’

“When we do His work and His will, rather than our own will, we will realize that the yoke is easy and the burden is light. He will be with us always. He will reveal to us the exact portion that we need for success with our families, our career, and every responsibility that we have in His Church. He will help us to grow individually and as brethren in the priesthood.”

The ability to have an unsettled conscience is a gift of God

by on Nov.28, 2010, under Quotes

“A disturbed conscience can be temporarily masked by physical stimulation of the mind and body where one yields to the temptations of alcohol, drugs, pornography, and worse. All this at the cost of an increased appetite for false efforts to calm an aching conscience with the risk of incurring unrelenting addictions. There is a better way to restore peace of conscience.

“The ability to have an unsettled conscience is a gift of God to help you succeed in this mortal life. It results principally from the influence of the Light of Christ on your mind and heart. The Light of Christ is that divine power or influence that emanates from God through Jesus Christ. It gives light and life to all things. It prompts all rational individuals throughout the earth to distinguish truth from error, right from wrong. It activates your conscience.”

President Gordon B. Hinckley – What Shall I Do Then with Jesus Which Is Called Christ?

by on Oct.17, 2010, under Talks

At this Easter season, may I share a few thoughts concerning him whose resurrection we commemorate—the Man of Miracles, our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Although he healed the sick, raised the dead, caused the lame to walk and the blind to see, there is no miracle comparable to the miracle of Christ himself.

We live in a world of pomp and power, of a glorified boasting of jet thrust and far-flying warheads. It is the same kind of boasting that produced the misery of the days of Caesar, Genghis Khan, Napoleon, and Hitler. In this kind of world it is not easy to recognize that—

Kathleen H. Hughes – Remembering the Lord’s Love

by on Oct.17, 2010, under Talks, Talks

Christ in a Red Robe, by Minerva Teichert, seemed the perfect painting to depict the scripture that we chose for this evening: “I am encircled about eternally in the arms of his love” (2 Nephi 1:15). Christ looks so welcoming with His arms outstretched toward us. Just as He invited the Nephites to “arise and come forth unto me” (3 Nephi 11:15), so He invites each of us to come, one by one, to Him, that we too may know that He is “the God of … the whole earth, and [has] been slain for the sins of the world” (3 Nephi 11:14). We learn how it feels to be encircled in His love when we accept that invitation.

Elder Robert D. Hales – “Behold, We Count Them Happy Which Endure”

by on Oct.17, 2010, under Talks, Talks

We are told in the scriptures that it is essential to endure to the end:

“Wherefore, if ye shall be obedient to the commandments, and endure to the end, ye shall be saved at the last day. And thus it is” (1 Ne. 22:31).

“Be patient in afflictions, for thou shalt have many; but endure them, for, lo, I am with thee, even unto the end of thy days” (D&C 24:8).

“Behold, we count them happy which endure” (James 5:11).

Examples of faithfully enduring to the end are taught by prophets of all ages as they demonstrate courage while enduring trials and tribulations to carry forth the will of God. Our greatest example comes from the life of our Savior and Redeemer, Jesus Christ. When suffering upon the cross at Calvary, Jesus felt the loneliness of agency when He pled to His Father in Heaven, “Why hast thou forsaken me?” (Matt. 27:46). The Savior of the world was left alone by His Father to experience, of His own free will and choice, an act of agency which allowed Him to complete His mission of the Atonement. (continue reading…)

Seek to Feel the Lord’s Love

by on Oct.17, 2010, under Quotes, Quotes

“The Savior’s invitation is clear and direct, and importantly for us, it is constant: ‘Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden. . . . Take my yoke upon you, . . . for . . . my burden is light’ (Matthew 11:28-30). This is the Lord’s promise to me and to you.

“My prayer for each of us is that we will remember when the Lord has spoken His peace to us and has encircled us in the arms of His love. And just as important, will you, if you haven’t felt that love for a while, seek to see it and feel it as you go about the ordinary tasks of your life. As you do this, over the days and months and years of your life, the memories of those interactions with the Lord will become sweet gifts to open a second time–or many times–to bolster you when life is difficult.

” ‘Peace I give unto you,’ the Lord promises, ‘not as the world giveth, give I unto you’ (John 14:27). Peace. Strength. It is what we long for and what is possible. We only need to turn toward His reaching arms.”

Our Prayers Will Be Answered

by on Oct.17, 2010, under Quotes, Quotes

There is nothing that we are enduring that Jesus does not understand, and He waits for us to go to our Heavenly Father in prayer. I testify that if we will be obedient and if we are diligent, our prayers will be answered, our problems will diminish, our fears will dissipate, light will come upon us, the darkness of despair will be dispersed, and we will be close to the Lord and feel of His love and of the comfort of the Holy Ghost. It is my prayer that we can find the faith, courage, and strength to endure to the end so that we may feel the joy of faithfully returning to the arms of our Heavenly Father.”

Koichi Aoyagi – Helping Hands, Saving Hands

by on Sep.16, 2010, under Talks, Talks

My brothers and sisters, I am deeply grateful for the opportunity to speak at this conference. I am grateful for President Thomas S. Monson, and I testify that he is a prophet of the living God. I am deeply impressed by the wonderful example of President Monson, who has spent his life using his hands to help and save others.

We live in a day when many people are faced with calamities and are in need of help due to the devastating effects of earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, and other natural disasters. The Church is reaching out to these people through humanitarian aid. Church members faithfully give generous fast offerings each month and perform service in a spirit of love. They literally offer helping hands in the Lord’s way. They follow the commandment of the Lord to “remember in all things the poor and the needy, the sick and the afflicted, for he that doeth not these things, the same is not my disciple” (D&C 52:40).

Offering Spiritual Help Invites All to Come to Christ

Ezra Taft Benson – Five Marks of the Divinity of Jesus Christ

by on Jan.01, 2010, under Talks

I take great joy in speaking to you tonight about our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. In Nephi’s words I say, “My soul delighteth to prophesy concerning him, … and my heart doth magnify his holy name” (2 Ne. 25:13).

Several weeks ago I had occasion to speak to over 700 sons of Judah in Oakland, California. In my formal remarks to them, I testified of our kinship—and the true Messiah. Following my remarks, we stood in line for several hours shaking the hands of these good people. I’ve never borne my testimony so many times. And many expressed belief in my testimony. As they did so, I thought of the prophetic phrase by Nephi in the Book of Mormon: “After [the Jews] have been scattered, and the Lord God hath scourged them by other nations for the space of many generations, yea, even down from generation to generation until they shall be persuaded to believe in Christ, the Son of God” (2 Ne. 25:16; italics added).

The first principle of the gospel is faith in the Lord Jesus Christ….

by on Dec.30, 2009, under Quotes, Quotes, Quotes

“The first principle of the gospel is faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. This includes faith in His divine birth and heavenly heritage and faith that, under His Father’s direction, He created the earth and all things that dwell therein (see John 1:10; Mosiah 3:8). At the very heart of our faith in Christ is the assurance that through His atoning sacrifice, though our sins may be as scarlet, they can become as white as snow (see Isaiah 1:18).”

What kind of existence can we hope for?….

by on Dec.30, 2009, under Quotes, Quotes, Quotes

“What kind of existence can we hope for? Those who come unto Christ, repent of their sins, and live in faith will reside forever in peace. Think of the worth of this eternal gift. Surrounded by those we love, we will know the meaning of ultimate joy as we progress in knowledge and in happiness. No matter how bleak the chapter of our lives may look today, because of the life and sacrifice of Jesus Christ, we may hope and be assured that the ending of the book of our lives will exceed our grandest expectations. ‘Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him’ (1 Corinthians 2:9).”

At times we may despair that our burdens are too great…

by on Oct.21, 2009, under Quotes, Quotes

“At times we may despair that our burdens are too great. When it seems that a tempest is raging in our lives, we may feel abandoned and cry out like the disciples in the storm, ‘Master, carest thou not that we perish?’ (Mark 4:38). At such times we should remember His reply: ‘Why are ye so fearful? How is it that ye have no faith?’ (v. 40).

“The healing power of the Lord Jesus Christ–whether it removes our burdens or strengthens us to endure and live with them like the Apostle Paul–is available for every affliction in mortality.”

In whose birth we commemorate this season…

by on Oct.21, 2009, under Quotes, Quotes

“He whose birth we commemorate this season is more than the symbol of a holiday. He is the Son of God, the Creator of the earth, the Jehovah of the Old Testament, the fulfillment of the Law of Moses, the Redeemer of mankind, the King of Kings, the Prince of Peace. . . .

” ‘And now, after the many testimonies which have been given of him, this is the testimony, last of all, which we give of him: That he lives!

” ‘For we saw him, even on the right hand of God; and we heard the voice bearing record that he is the Only Begotten of the Father–

” ‘That by him, and through him, and of him, the worlds are and were created, and the inhabitants thereof are begotten sons and daughters unto God.’ (D&C 76:22-24).”

The Savior’s perfect submission to the Eternal Father…

by on Oct.18, 2009, under Quotes

“The Savior’s perfect submission to the Eternal Father is the very essence of a broken heart and a contrite spirit. Christ’s example teaches us that a broken heart is an eternal attribute of godliness. When our hearts are broken, we are completely open to the Spirit of God and recognize our dependence on Him for all that we have and all that we are. The sacrifice so entailed is a sacrifice of pride in all its forms. Like malleable clay in the hands of a skilled potter, the brokenhearted can be molded and shaped in the hands of the Master.

“A broken heart and a contrite spirit are also preconditions to repentance.”

In Minerva Teichert’s magnificent painting Christ in a Red Robe,…

by on Oct.18, 2009, under Quotes

“In Minerva Teichert’s magnificent painting Christ in a Red Robe, the Savior of mankind, with nail prints in His hands, stands majestically with outstretched arms. In tenderness and compassion He looks down upon the women straining to reach Him.

“I love the symbolism of women reaching out to touch the Savior. We long to be close to the Lord, for we know that He loves each of us and desires to encircle us ‘eternally in the arms of his love.’ His touch can heal ailments spiritual, emotional, or physical. He is our Advocate, Exemplar, Good Shepherd, and Redeemer. Where else would we look, where else would we reach, where else would we come but to Jesus Christ, ‘the author and finisher of our faith’?”
